Retreat at Twin Lakes Walk Through, Part Two
Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 7:23AM One month ago, I presented a video walk-through of The Retreat at Twin Lakes from George Zimmerman’s perspective — from the moment he stepped out of his vehicle to the time he says he was punched in the face by Trayvon Martin.
This is part two of that video. It explores the fateful night of February 26 from Trayvon’s point of view. How accurate is it? I don’t know, but it should help you to better understand the area and the path the young man may have taken.
I received several e-mails from people; each with their unique requests for footage. I wish I could have accommodated you all, but I couldn’t. What I can tell you is that, as of today, two fences are erected along the northwest side of the complex, running south from Oregon Avenue and parallel to the western edge that keep people from entering the way Trayvon allegedly did as described by Zimmerman. There is a locked pedestrian entry alongside the main gate, so there is no reason to access the Retreat from anywhere else, other than the southeast gate. Also, clubhouse parking is restricted to tenants that are using the facility at the time, including the community pool. There is a street sign at the intersection of Retreat View Circle and Twin Trees Lane upon entering from the north, off Oregon Avenue. It is located atop the stop sign on the same corner as the clubhouse. Look for it in the video. It’s interesting to note that Zimmerman could not remember the name of the street, Twin Trees, nor did he notice those signs.

I know the camera is shaky in several scenes, but there's not much I could have done with it.
Dave: Very impressive. Both the music and the footage. I appreciate all the time and effort it takes on behalf of everyone to make these videos.
I was really surprised by the mail area. It is much larger than I had imagined. It makes perfect sense that someone would run there to get out of the rain.
Another thing, in my 'mind' I always had Trayvon walking straight to the mail area via the streets. It was interesting to see the 'walk' down the footpaths. (Way O/T, but lovely area, too.)
It always helps me to dig out my map of Retreat View Circle, so I will post it here for convenience. Everyone is probably better with 'directions' than me, but just in case.
Taaffe's place is the far end of the fourth group of townhomes--top of the 'map' and to the left of the arrow.
You can see the footpath leading off RVC and circling around the back of the club house and leading toward the mail area. (The mail area itself is very tiny on the map.)
The little blue square is where Zimmerman allegedly parked as he initiated his NEN call, and the yellow 'X' is approximately where Zimmerman shot Trayvon.

[I always try to choose music that befits the footage, nan11, especially when no dialog is necessary. I'm glad you like it. It started out uplifting and ended on a sad note because poor Trayvon had no idea what lay ahead as he returned to the confines of the community. He should have felt even safer.
The mail area and the back of the clubhouse were perfect spots to get out of the rain. Under the mail gazebo, Trayvon could keep a watch on his surroundings, including the idiot who was stalking him. At that point, he had no idea that trouble was on the horizon. I would have proceeded with caution, and I'm sure that's exactly what he did.
It's good you linked a map. This way, people can get a better understanding of the layout. Anyway, thanks. I don't think a lot of people quite grasp the amount of work that goes into one of these things, and it's only made worse when YouTube wants to be uncooperative. That's frustrating!]

After seeing the distance he walked to the store and then back it is no wonder he did not feel like running anymore. I still am not clear why Mr Zimmerman chased him to begin with. 20 more seconds and Trayvon could have made it home safely and we would not be talking about this. No doubt someone will know exactly why Trayvon did not make it home, even if they weren't there.

[And it's very important to note, as you pointed out, Michelle, that Trayvon walked TO the store and BACK home. That's a tremendous amount of walking - only to be pursued and labelled by a stalker. And the boy was supposed to RUN?

Dave, you can never imagine that I could cry but you just made it happen. Filming the path taken, the music, absolutely excellent choice and placement. The driver in a state of high at the thought of finding an unsuspecting target, grossly creep along instilling first inquisitiveness, then fear. GZ was not going to quit until...until! ....... Trayvon's walk, oh my God, how horrible, to follow in his shoes to this music, his last walk after listening to the music of cheerfulness and joy in personality portrayed as he went out that evening. In the end a funeral walk, he didn't know, he didn't know! I am glad if Trayvon did give him some fight. No matter, GZ's intent was to kill! If God has any justice we can live by, then don't allow Zimmerman to be free. The real devil himself couldn't have followed with more glee and anticipation in what he wanted to accomplish. George Zimmerman did. God Bless you Dave, for your dedication to freely give of yourself to those of us who have the pleasure of your presence here. You are appreciated highly even though we do not convey that in our human frailty. Your humble approach and work may seem unrewarding to you at times but in your message people find that you have in your heart the good intent in what you do. Thank you Dave!
[Well, New Puppy, that was a downright emotional comment! You almost made ME cry.
Since I was a graphic artist for many years, it's easy for me to say there's a lot of thought that goes into creative work; not just sitting at the art board or computer. With videos, it's the same thing. I know how I want to approach a subject from what I learn about it. For instance, I can create an appropriate logo once I have a chance to talk to the person wanting it. I get a "feel" for it. Same thing here, although going in, I never know what's going to pop out, other than I have a good idea about the type of music I want to set it to. The next thing is finding it, but I have a great selection of classical music and I generally have an idea. Ode to Joy kept popping into my head, so that came naturally. Actually, the 3 selections did. One little secret you don't know is that I can tweak the tempo to fit the allotted time. In other words, I can speed it up or slow it down a bit, but I would never do it to the point that it gets lost or confusing. It's got to fit the beat of the video.
Of course, my intent is to give everyone the opportunity to look at it and see for themselves. Yes, this video does give the impression that Zimmerman was stalking his prey. Yes, you walk with Trayvon, taking his final steps. That's precisely my intent, and it's amazing what music can do to accompany what a camera spits out. Obviously, I do this sort of thing because I enjoy it - not in the sense that I truly enjoy it because it will benefit me, but more like doing it because I know it will help others understand what happened. If I can help bring justice, then so be it. Either way, it will stand forever online. Years hence, someone may look up the history of Trayvon's untimely death and learn from it.
Most of the time, I feel very rewarded inside, just because I know so many people appreciate it. I don't want anything in return, but it's nice to know that it doesn't go unnoticed. Thanks, my intent is always good, and I'm glad you know it.]
Dave: Indeed! You did an excellent job of creating an 'atmosphere' with your music selections.
I just wanted to add the following quote. I think we can conclude from it that as Trayvon left the mail area, Zimmerman followed him in his vehicle--all the way to the cut through.
It is only my opinion, but I believe Trayvon was already feeling some pretty serious fright. Imagine a vehicle driving slowly along behind you. Driven by a stranger, talking into his cell phone.
The same stranger you noticed watching you as you took shelter from the rain.
One last thing, I haven't seen this statement come directly from Zimmerman in an interview--so, why? I don't think I missed any released interviews. How did Serino come across this tidbit?

I'm certain Trayvon felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up, just thinking about the creep who was tailing him. I just can't imagine why there are people that still blame him. Zimmerman was a stalker and he admitted following the boy. How does a guy like that even think he can get away with murder? I don't get it.]

I wanted to know how much time it took to walk from the mail area until Trayvon started to run. At 58 sec into the nen call GZ said now he is coming towards me at 2:06 he said " shit, he is running". That is 1:08. I timed you leaving the mail area at 2:25. You were right where GZ jumped out of his car at 3:33. He must have been right on top of him.
[This is precisely what I'm hoping everyone does - decipher my video and put it into proper perspectives. The more people involved, the more we understand the situation. Believe me, Amsterdam, it is my pleasure to do this, so thank you for letting me know how you feel.]

[During the Anthony trial, when Kerry Sanders wasn't sitting next to me, Lilia Luciano was. Very pretty woman and very nice. Sanders kept telling me she was much more famous, and I understood that because she came from a Spanish speaking network, either Telemundo or Univision. I don't remember which, but I will say she melted my heart. And I helped her with my notes.
By the way, I don't think that suit will fly. It's tough to beat news organizations. They have a lot of leeway.]

Dave I do not understand the lawsuit. Dispatcher asked for color, he replied. BUT a little later Mr Zimmerman did say he's black without being prompted or asked. It is okay for Mr Zimmerman to do it but not NBC? What am I missing? I am sure he said it a second time, that 911 call became part of my final paper.
[There was information cut out of the news report. It's similar to something taken completely out of context. For example, let's say I tell a reporter that "I am Dave Knechel, and as far as I'm concerned, I will never support the communist party."
Suppose a news organization, like NBC, turns around and quotes me as saying, "Knechel says he will support the communist party."
What I said was altered and the message was completely turned around. Now, that's not quite the way it happened with Zimmerman, but my example should help illustrate how news can be misconstrued.]

[That's a very interesting article, and one I agree with. I have written about this subject in the past; why white-on-white and black-on-black shootings don't seem to make the news. At the same time, however, the Martin and Davis cases are more about vigilantism and the darn SYG law than it is racism. By that, and don't take me wrong, I mean there would be less shootings without the law. SYG enables idiots like Zimmerman and Dunn, whether race related or not. They have a shoot first, ask later mindset and it's not a healthy one.]
Michelle: Yep. He did say it twice--in case he wasn't clear enough the first time. And the second time it was totally uncalled for. (The dispatcher asked the first time, iirc.)
NBC really didn't have to doctor that tape to make their point, but I guess that is with hindsight.
They apologized and took action by firing three people, though. I think they have it covered, personally--but we will see.
I'm convinced that O'Mara is using this as part of his defense strategy. I'm sure it will bring a lot of favorable coverage to Georgie boy at a 'crucial' time.
Timing is everything. At least according to O'Mara.
[Civil cases can drag on and on. Look at Zenaida. I do think O'Mara is the force behind this suit, but I doubt he can coordinate one with the other. He'd like to, but I guarantee the court won't bend for him or Zimmerman. Besides, NBC ain't going to go into this fight without a weapon that's not stronger than Zimmerman's. I doubt if the other case can be brought up at trial, either way. In other words, one won't be able to affect the other.]

Amsterdam: Thanks for pointing that out. The timing is so tight there that now I'm believing he was parked facing west.
I doubt if he had time to turn the vehicle around before jumping out and following.

So, his vehicle's headlights should have illuminated the path for a few seconds. (I think it is confirmed that they stay on automatically, even when the key is removed.)

Merely firing some people is not sufficient. The race element has been ruled out a long time ago, I mean Zims had a black Great grandfather. NBC is going to lose and I bet Zim gets about 80 million dollars, at the least.

Dave, words cannot express my appreciation for the video. Most have already shared their emotions and thoughts, so I won't repeat what they have already expressed. It took me back to my days as a 17 yr old. (I know. The dinosaur age). And I thought, how would I feel if alone walking home, and someone followed me in a vehicle and made sure I knew they were following? Where could I go? I know. To an area where no vehicle can enter. That would be the cut-through for Trayvon. That is where he went. That is where he thought he lost the creepy looking guy.
How was Trayvon to know that Zimmerman would get out of his truck and follow him on foot? And that, IMO, is why Zimmerman shall be found guilty of 2nd degree murder.

Well, Dave, I appreciate all the work that went into the video, but I couldn't watch the last part. When you started walking through it, I was so creeped out I had to turn it off. You can actually imagine yourself in TM's body walking that. If you're not TM's height then I imagine the times would be a little different in that it would take you longer to walk the same distance he did.But it's still revealing. I, too, wasn't aware of the distance TM had walked to the store and back. As a teenager it's almost nothing, though, to walk long distances. He was still probably tired and just ready to be home.
I filed that lawsuit mentioned above in the "good luck with that" file. Oh sure, they might settle eventually but probably not until years down the road, and if he's found guilty I imagine it will come up in any appeal filed. I was once on a jury in a car accident case and the jury was more stingy with money than the judge would have been. I might need to cross file it in the "dream on" bin. Anything to bring in money - just this time it's going to be a long long time coming.
I came across this in the editorial page of the Jacksonville Times and a couple of areas interested me. The person giving the opinion for the Times said :
One obvious question, which a jury may get to consider, is whether Dunn acted differently because he had his gun. Many of us are annoyed by loud music in vehicles, but most of us simply endure it and move on.
Does it seem reasonable that a person armed with a gun might be more emboldened to approach the SUV and complain or make inflammatory remarks?
And does the Stand Your Ground law further embolden some who carry guns?

While I think NBC was wrong, I don't know if it reaches a level Zimmerman thinks it has. It's tough to go up against a media giant, and it's going to be tougher for Z to explain his actions that night. In a civil case, he'll take the stand. Dave, once again I'm amazed at the dedication you have in helping us understand the unimaginable. This video is important and powerful, possibly more than you realize.
As I watched your latest work, I enjoyed the music right up to the point you enter the mail kiosk. You see, my friend, in my mind your music stopped and the clear strong voice of a young girl began telling me of the last moments of Trayvon Martin's life on this earth.
It wasn't until I downloaded your vid and snipped the section beginning with your entry into the kiosk, that I realized just how powerful you video is. Your video shows a run time at the entry of 2:14 with your fade out at the point of this child's death being at 4:34 for a length of 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
Several months ago I downloaded DeeDee's interview with BDLR. I snipped out all the spoken words of the SA's questioning and spliced a seamless narrative of DeeDee's story. This narrative has been in my project file with only an occasional partial use in my videos.
I'm sure I now know why.
Anyone who has followed my videos knows how much effort I have put into pointing out the timeline problems with Zimmerman's story. A short while ago I realized something as a result of your work. Remember the 2 minutes and 20 seconds I pointed out as your walk taking from the mail kiosk to where Trayvon died?
DeeDee's spoken narrative, without interruption is 2 minutes and 21 seconds long from the point she says Trayvon "went into the mail thing" to the point she says "then the phone just hung up".
I'm leaving tomorrow for a few days to go to my cabin in the mountains. When I get back, with your permission, I plan to publish "Dave Walks With DeeDee".
There is no way I can see this timing as being coincidental.

Those are very powerful words because so many go unnoticed for their efforts to the extent of damage where the heart fails, not by bullet like Trayvon, by stress in its deterioration. How nice it would be if everyone could receive enough feedback to know their worthiness in this world. How easy it is for any of us to write or say a few words that add to your self-worthiness. How many more would a better person just to be a little bit noticed. maybe even great works. It does have to come voluntarily, and that's what you receive here. It is good that you know your trial and efforts are not wasted, that being noticed makes you feel good.

What an amazing work.I had no idea that 7-11 was that big or the walk that long. Tray was walking alone probably talking on his phone the way all teenagers do. How very,very sad that he would be murdered in less than an hour. I can't even imagine that. You have truly out done yourself on this video. Great choices for the music also. Please know I'm one of the many who appreiate all your hard work in keeping us interested and informed.

I'm so sorry for your inability to put yourself in the shoes of a parent who has lost a child to murder and then to have that child maligned by the murderer. No SYG or ANY law will ever justify what was done to Tray. I'm sorry for your total lack of compassion and empathy I can only hope you are never in need of either trait.

In my head, I just imagine what it would be like and set it to music at the same time. Well, I had other ideas, too, but these were my initial picks. The interesting part is editing the footage and aligning the music to what U have. It's a challenge, but not too big of one, and I love a good challenge anyway. I appreciate your thoughts on this!]
You mean the parents who have lied about what their son was? You mean the Dad who told Serino that wasn't his son screaming on the 911 call, but then later said he never said that? So I am supposed to believe Tracy Martin over Serino and another cop. Not happening.
Then Crump just admitted that Trayvons dad got ahold of this girl and kept calling her before she was ever interviewed. I have no sympathy for Tracy Martin. His life has improved 100 percent since Trayvon has been dead. He hangs out with famous people and has made money off this, dont pretend they haven't. Those school records are going to show exactly how Trayvon was and he was only at the retreat due to a 3rd suspension. Getting suspended 3 times is NOT normal. that is not the behavior of the a future aeronautics engineer. He actually called himself nolimit N word on twitter- what jury do you think is going to see all this, and they will and say, oh no way this sweet boy was capable of bad behavior! This isn't getting past stand your ground.
Man, I hope the Judge doesn't grant his request to remove the GPS.

I’ll post the links—again—from the evidence documents, containing the information on Tracy’s statement. It is evident that the SPD had something to do with the confusion.

I believe the jury—if it comes to that—will be instructed to give no more credibility to the statements of law enforcement officers than to regular witnesses.
I know Tracy Martin is a grieving father. I have some idea of what Christmas will be like for Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton; and the many, many others who loved and cared for Trayvon. My heart goes out to them.
Can you link where he called himself: quote: “nolimit N?” I ask this sincerely, because I believe that it was done by someone with IT experience who broke into Trayvon’s account and falsified it. If you can prove I am wrong, please do so.
You say this isn’t getting past a SYG hearing. Have you checked with Mr. O’Mara on that? He has admitted it is not a SYG case, and is so far only saying that he will file a motion for a more traditional self-defense hearing. In other words, a hearing that would overlook the fact that Zimmerman was the first aggressor.
As far as I know, we are waiting for more word on that.

Dave: I’m fresh from reading O’Mara’s 74 page motion requesting the modification of the conditions of Zimmerman’s release.
I had to say my Om’s and take little breaks, but I made it.
The attachments include parts of O’Connor’s deposition (Page 33) and parts of Santiago’s (Page 36.)
Just for an example here is a quote from (Santiago) page 44:
After everything we have learned about the Neighbourhood Watch program and about the Stand-Your-Ground law, we have the above from a law enforcement officer during deposition.
It just keeps getting stranger. It confirms that no arrest was ever intended to be made in this case. The meetings that Santiago talks about—and these are the same meetings that O’Mara tried to make sound so secretive a few weeks ago—were only routine meetings that I’m sure law enforcement officers attend every day, for every case. They have to work as a team and the team has to meet so as the duties are divided and so every team member knows what the other is doing.
At these supposed top secret meetings, no phone calls were played; no interviews were reviewed; the re-enactment video was not discussed. There was nary a mention of any of Zimmerman’s many discrepancies.
Yet, he was ‘surprised’ when Randy Smith ‘suddenly announced’ that he felt charges should be laid. Why, everyone was shocked—don’t you know!
Anyway there are other interesting parts, but it’s bugging me just rethinking it as I try to prepare this comment. So I’ll stop. It’s an interesting read, though.

You have no proof Trayvon's parents are liars. Even Mark O'Mara doesn't call them that. You cannot make statements like that with zero proof.
You can think and hate all you want, but you cannot trash Tracy Martin. All monies are donated to charities and he is not getting rich.
I sometimes hang around famous people. What difference does it make? Those famous people are thre for a reason and it has nothing to do with money.
We have no idea what those school records will show. We know nothing about who wrote what on Trayvon's Facebook page. Even so, I have called myself an asshole before. So what? In your world, I deserve to be shot to death, too?

Oh, Britt, I didn't look at this like it was a contest because, on my blog, I can always win if push comes to shove. But I wasn't at that point with you. I've said on numerous occasions that I actually like you. I find you amusing. Here's the problem, though. You distinctly remind me of one Michelle From Madison (MFM) from the Casey Anthony days. She made the rounds about how we were all wrong, and in the end, she was the winner. Casey was acquitted, but MFM made completely ludicrous statements. It's like claiming that Obama would win reelection because Romney was a sexual predator. Now, Obama did win, so, in a sense, part of that claim was right. However, if you asked the person to prove Romney did what they accused him of, the person would go away and come back with other stupid statements about Romney's wife and children. Once again, nothing to back it up.
You did something seriously flawed in your response to me. First, you say I don't want the truth. Huh? I want nothing but the truth and I've given you ample opportunity to explain yourself. Show me documentation! Anything! I get nothing. There's a huge argument going on now about who was telling the truth and which cop said what about Tracy. The cops are in dispute and it's all in official documents. Point is, we just don't know who is telling the truth and neither do you. This is for the court to decide. We can discuss it, but bring something to the table.

I do not distort truths, I analyze evidence, just like attorneys from both sides. I produce videos that show what paths Zimmerman and Trayvon took. I write opinion pieces. As far as I know, it's still my Second Amendment right to do so, but in your small world, there is only one version of everything - yours.
I will leave the door open. I do not look at this as a victory of any kind. I love diversity, but YOU are far from that. You are a bigot.
